The Kościan Forest District is located in the western part of the Wielkopolska Region, approximately 45 km from Poznań in the direction of Wrocław.

The territorial extend of the District is 107,501 ha and is included in different 5 powiats (Gostyń, Kościan, Leszno, Wolsztyn and Grodzisk) and 11 gminas.

The District’s silviculture encompasses 16,037 ha, of which forests cover 15,382 ha, including 70% forests serving the protective function.

Pine is predominant local species, covering 68.3% of forest cover. Other popular species include: alder –9.7%, birch and black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) – 6.7% and oak – 6.7%

Forms of nature conservation

Numerous forms of nature conservation are the unquestionable advantages of our area:

·          nature monuments, including 32 trees (mostly common oaks, of which the largest is over 800 cm in circumference) and 1 boulder.

·          2 landscape parks: the Przemęt Landscape Park and the Gen. Dezydery Chłapowski Landscape Park. The latter protects the unique forest stands between fields. The oldest trees might have been planted byGeneral Chłapowski himself.

·          4 areas of protected landscape and 2 areas of special fowl protection, which are included in the NATURA 2000 network.

·           nature reserves, which include the areas of natural value and cover 37.28 ha of forests in total.

Forest education
In 1997 a nature forest trail was set up to comply with forestry education requirements the trail passes through the Przemęt and Olejnica Sub-Districts.
Its looped-shape begins and ends at the car park in Olejnica, on the road from Kaszczor to Przemęt, near the isthmus between the Lakes Górskie and Olejnickie.
Depending on one’s interests and stamina, two trail options are available, with distances varying from 5 to 8 km. Along the trail there are 10 stops available, each with valuable information on some of the forests fascinating features. Another place for educational activities, is the nursery in Racot. Mainly aimed at teenagers, it presents the variousstages of forest development: from seed to mature tree. A stroll through the surrounding forest is always an opportunity to discover something new. The forest changes with the seasons: plants’ blossom, and foresters’ activities vary at different times. Our principle is that the forest itself offers the best teaching aids.

Tourism

Rest areas are provided as well as  forest car parks and a camp site near the Lake Dominickie for the developing tourist trade. Visitors can also enjoy scenic views from the piers on the Lakes Olejnickie, Radomierskie, and near the peat bog on the Lake Święte. The area is crossed by numerous hiking, cycling and kayaking trails. The trans-continental R-9 cycling trail which connects the Adriatic Sea (Pula) and the Baltic Sea (Gdańsk) is also routed through our District and crosses the Krzywiń gmina (Żelazno- Lubiń-Zbęchy-Rąbiń).

The diverse and scattered forest areas of the District are located among numerous fields, lakes and canals of the River Obra. In the area there are also many towns and settlements with old churches, chapels and parks. Their wealth and diversity add to the attractiveness of our District.
